David I Dunfermline Fife Scotland

David I of Scotland was the man who, perhaps more than any, shaped the Scotland we live in today. Born in Dunfermline some time in the 1080s, David was the youngest son of Malcolm III and St Margaret, and spent his youth at the Court of his brother-in-law Henry I of England. He succeeded his brother Alexander as King of Scots in 1124, by which time he was in his mid-40s and famous for his piety. Indeed, he was later criticised as being too pious to make a successful monarch but in fact his generosity to the church, and his many abbeys including Holyrood, Melrose and Dryburgh, and establishment of bishops at Caithness, Dunblane and Aberdeen, had sound practical effects too, for the monks did much to improve the country's ecoonomy by engaging in sheep farming, coal working and salt making.

David issued the first Scottish coinage, which changed the economy in itself, but, more importantly, he also reorganised civil institutions and founded about 15 royal burghs, such as Stirling, Dunfermline, in effect, Scotland's first towns. Nothing he did would have more influence than this. He extended the feudal system into Scotland by granting land to Anglo-Normans in return for feudal services, and appointed them as royal officials such as sheriffs and justiciars.

In the 1130s, David met with resistance in Moray and the north, until then ruled by an independent dynasty, but he successfully annexed it to his kingdom and reorganized its governance. He also extended his kingdom south-wards. When Henry I of England died in 1135, David I invaded England, ostensibly on behalf of his niece Matilda. However, he was also taking advantage of the confusion resulting from the civil war in England, and using the opportunity to try to extend his kingdom southwards. Although he was defeated at the Battle of the Standard, in Yorkshire in 1138 he continued his campaign until the Treaty of Durham confirmed his possession of Northumberland.

David died at Carlisle, Cumberland, on May 24, 1153, aged about 73. He was buried in Dunfermline, where he had extended the church into an abbey in commemoration of his parents. Many scholars use the term Davidian Revolution to summarise the huge changes which took place in Scotland during his reign, Early assessments of David I held him to be a pious king, a reformer and a civilising influence on a barbarous nation, and by the 18th century was added 'state-builder' and maintainer of Scottish independence. It's a reputation which remains unsullied even by today's cynical historians, who stress his influence in shaping the nature and culture of the the institutions and methods of government and civil administration which would dominate Scotland's development for centuries to come.

Charles I Dunfermline Fife Scotland

One of Fife's greatest sons? Probably not. But King Charles I cast a great shadow and, in his failures, led to major changes in the development of Great Britain. Charles I, who reigned 1625-49, was born in Dunfermline in 1600, the son of James VI and I. However he was not the best of kings. Reserved and self-righteous, problems often of his own making dogged him throughout his reign. Details are complex, with tensions revolving around finances and religion. But this was also a power struggle with a Parliament growing in strength, and one in which Charles' intransigence and notions of his own greatness won him few friends. When matters degenerated into civil war it was Parliament which triumphed. Charged with treason, Charles was found guilty and beheaded within days, Parliament then passing a Bill abolishing the office of king. It was to be over 20 years before his son, Charles II, was to sit on the throne, and by then the relationship between king and country had changed forever.

King James I Dunfermline Fife Scotland

King James I of Scotland (1394-1437) ruled Scotland with such a firm hand, his death
was perhaps inevitable. He was born in Dunfermline, the son of Robert III and Annabella Drummond of the House of Stuart. On passage to France in 1405, however, he was captured by the English who demanded a ransom for his release. James' uncle, then regent, refused to pay and James endured confinement lasting 18 years, finally obtaining liberty in 1424 following his uncle's death. He was crowned at Scone Abbey and, after marrying Joan Beaufort, cousin of King Henry VI of England, introduced financial and legal reforms, even attempting to remodel Scotland's Parliament along English lines. He exacted revenge on those who had governed in his absence but his attempts to curb the lawless nobility made him deeply unpopular. In a conspiracy led by the Earl of Atholl, James was murdered in his bed at the, royal lodgings at Blackfriars, Perth, by assassins headed by Sir Robert Graham.

Lydox Mill Dairsie Fife Scotland

An old view of Lydox Mill, Dairsie, Fife, Scotland. The Old Parish of Dairsie in 1861. This parish is situated in the north-east of the County of Fife, and is bounded on the west by Cupar, on the north by Logie and Kilmany, on the east by Leuchars, and on the south by Kemback. It is about two and a half miles in length, and nearly as much in breadth. The surface slopes gently upwards, terminating in the hills of Foodie and Craigfoodie, which are situated near the centre of the Parish, and which are capable of bearing heavy crops nearly up to their summits. The soil in general is very fertile, and is in many places rich and deep, and is also in a high state of cultivation. Freestone and whinstone abound in the Parish. The mansion-houses are Craigfoodie and Pittormie. The old castle of Dairsie is in the immediate vicinity of the Parish Church, but it is now in a very dilapidated condition. It was rebuilt by Archbishop Spottiswoode, in which it is said he compiled his Church History. It was at one time a place of considerable importance and strength, and is said to have been for some time the residence of Archbishop Sharp; in 1355 it had the honour of having a Parliament convened within its walls. The Parish Church was erected by Archbishop Spottiswoode. It is beautifully situated, and its fine massive Gothic windows and polygonal tower renders it an object of interest and admiration to visitors. There is also a Free Church in the Parish. The Parish School is near Middlefoodie, and there is a Free Church School at Dairsie village, and a Female School at Foodieash.

There is a spinning mill at Lydox Mill, and three corn and flour mills, the machinery of which is propelled by water power obtained from the Eden, which skirts the southern boundary of the Parish, and is spanned by a bridge of three arches, built by Archbishop Spottiswoode to facilitate his communication with St Andrews. The inhabitants are partly engaged in agricultural operations, and a few in handloom linen weaving. The road from Kirkcaldy to Newport passes through the Parish, and it is also traversed by the Dundee fork of the E. P. & D. Railway, which has a station near Dairsie.

The Post Town is Cupar, with a Sub-Post Office at Dairsie, William Brodie, Sub-Post Master. A postman arrives from Cupar at about 9.45 A.M., and leaves at 1.45 P.M., reaching Cupar in time for despatch by the earliest afternoon mails.
